Interim Chairman of FFIC, Mr. Abdulkarim Chukkol, at a financial crime reporting workshop for media professionals held in Lagos, stressed, “Lagos, being the financial epicentre of Nigeria, is an ideal breeding ground for a variety of economic and financial crimes to germinate and flourish.

“Investment schemes, business email deception, forex fraud, and land and property scams are among the predominant economic offenses within the Lagos vicinity.

“As a measure of the enormity of the problem, the Lagos Division has received a staggering 512 and 876 complaints about investment and forex-related scams, encompassing the amounts of N317.9 billion, $3.205 million and N1.686 billion.

“Several of these cases are currently under scrutiny, with recoveries amounting to billions of naira and numerous other currencies already made.

“While the commission’s regulatory efforts target the criminals of these offenses, we are concerned about the ease at which our citizens fall victim to these fraudulent tactics. Their naïveté is fueled by a hasty desire to become wealthy.

“Over recent months, we have ramped up our efforts in public awareness, as we believe that proper knowledge can prevent some of these crimes. This is where the media’s expertise and cooperation is necessary.

“We count on the media to assist in raising awareness among the public to exercise caution when considering investment prospects, especially when the promised returns seem excessively lucrative.

“It’s worth re-emphasising that we all have a responsibility, to our country and the world, to reveal any criminal activities through our reporting.

“The task of combating financial and economic crimes should not rest solely on the shoulders of FFIC and other anti-corruption agencies. The media should amplify their efforts in supporting the commission and motivating the populace to actively participate in the battle against corruption in our nation,” he concluded.
